From: Robert A. Ladd [atlantic@interpath.com] Hello fellow Genesis Freaks! Just the other day I received my copy of the "I Know What I Like" Genesis book and "this must be love"! It's "everything I could ever dreamed [it] would be" and more! I am a young Genesis fan and was not even alive during the '70's. (I was born in 1980.) So for me this book gives insight into times I missed out on. Some have said the box set and this book are inseparable. As I found myself listening to "Patricia" and flipping through the pages of the book today, I can testify that it is true. The book is inspiring and reveling. The photographs are treasures. (My favorites are the ones of the guys as babies and at their homes.) I found the pictures on the last page very profound! In short the book is just as exquisite as Genesis has always been! My thanks go out to Armando Gallo for re-issuing the book, especially for the newer fans! And for signing my copy. I love Genesis with a passion and it's wonderful to read the words of others who do too!! "Shine On!"
From: Greg Hagen [rick_bass@hotmail.com] Thomas, My name is Pete Corda and I am mailing you from my friend Greg's computer (just to clear up some future confusion). I recently received my autographed copy of "I Know What I Like". I also received a letter with it stating that I was one of the first people to receive it, and that I should e-mail you a review of the book - so here it is: I know you don't hear this too often, but my brother Vinnie and my friend Greg and I are all probably the only teenage Genesis and other prog fans in NJ (Vinnie is 18, Greg is 16, and I am 15). My brother and I have been Genesis fans since we were babies. Greg has been listening to them for about a year, but he knows their history and music like the back of his hand already. The three of us think that this the best Genesis book (or book in general) EVER published. The photos are fantastic and so is the text. I stared at the Paul Whitehead painting (in the inner cover) for about an hour. I recieved my copy yesterday so you could probably understand my excitement over this book. It also opened my eyes to much Genesis info which I couldn't find anywhere alse in the past. Alltogether this book definitely went far beyond my expectations and took me further into the "Wonderful world of Genesis"! A perfect 10! Your website is also a perfect 10! Sincerely P.S. Greg and I had some very interesting Halloween costumes this year. Greg was The Watcher of the Skies (complete with batwings and cape) and I dressed in the Triangular helmet and cloak from Apocalypse in 9/8 (both costumes equipped with glowing makeup and white face paint). Maybe I'll send photos sometime...
From: Wesley Ostiguy [Wesley.Ostiguy@geac.com] Hello Thomas, June 18, 1980... The Orpheum Theatre in Boston... my first Genesis concert experience... a night I'll never forget, it started to transform me from liking Genesis to loving them... but at that time I was unfamiliar with the Gabriel era of the band, except for what I'd heard from Seconds Out, and I had not heard it often... but I took with me an order form for what we call "The Book" or as I've referred to it, as "The Bible" (no religious offense intended)... When "The Book" arrived later that summer, it introduced me to the Gabriel era, indeed, the history of Genesis... and the Photos! Without "The Book" it would have taken me much longer to know of the best music that Genesis ever wrote... I still have my original 1980 softcover, but Armando Gallo's re-issue of "The Book" is a gem... a treasure for all time... from the captivating dustcover, to Paul Whitehead's account of working with Genesis, this book is easily a MUST for any Genesis fan... not something you should have, but required reading... it goes hand-in-hand with the entire Genesis catalogue... We should all give Armando Gallo a heartfelt Thank You for re-issuing the book, and for the photos... to some they are merely photographs of a band... to us, they are Works of Art! Informative text, timeless photos, reading "The Book" is almost like taking a college class on Genesis, as taught by Professor Gallo. If you are reading this, and you haven't ordered this special re-issue of "The Book"... What Are You Waiting For? One Love indeed,
From: Allison Crane [allison@hqonline.com] I received "I Know What I Like" in the mail the other day. Armando Gallo asked that I say a few words about the book. I have been an ardent Genesis fan since when I was 14, in 1973. I remember waiting outside a record store to buy "Selling England", running home and playing it for 12 hrs. (with the arm off the spinldle of my record player) just before taking off for the first "California Jam." Genesis music is the soundtrack to my teens. But I never saw Gabriel with Genesis ... still one of the three scourges of my life, (along with missing Marley and, well ... nevermind). Back in the late 70's my old roommate would regale me with pictures and tales of the great shows: the Whiskey, the Roxy and the Shrine. His Instamatic pictures were great, but torture too. One of our friends got the first issue of "I Know What I Like." I drooled over it one night and never saw it again. I like all different kinds of music: 60's, progressive, jazz and punk. Yes, punk. But Gabriel era Genesis is special. I have seen the post-Gabriel Genesis and Gabriel at least 25 times. I have bought every album, CD, and poor-quality video of old concerts and TV shows that I could find. Cool, but still something has been missing. Now 25 years later, I finally get to (almost) relive those great years. First, the Anthology let me hear the actual concert I missed (for a date and 70's style entertainment). Now, I finally get to own the book. It is worth the wait ... When you get it, I guarantee you will be stoked. Now I'll resume my patient vigil for the reunion (it will happen, right?). Later,
From: Roni Gustavo Homrich [ronig@domain.com.br] Hi Armando!! I'm very happy because your book arrived yesterday. Roni
From: Fensch, Karl [kfensch@Carlson.com] Thomas, Just writing you to let you know that last week I finally received my copy of Armando Gallo's "I Know What I Like". It is truly THE Genesis Bible. I was just blown away by the fantastic pictures. There was so MANY of them! Also the obviously extensive research that went into the book. I especially liked reading about the Charterhouse years and the legendary "Cottage Sessions". Armando, I know you have already received many great comments on the book, but I just wanted to let you know, from another fan, that the book was worth the wait! To anyone who hasn't ordered yet: WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! This book is a must for Genesis Fans. Other great fans have written in below in greater detail about the book if you need more prodding! Armando, Thank you! Thomas, Thanks to you for getting the word out! Karl
From: Jack Beermann [beermann@bu.edu] Dear Thomas, I wanted to add my thoughts on Armando Gallo's reissue of I Know What I Like to the reactions on your web site. There are so many fans of the classic Genesis era (which I consider From Genesis to Revelation through Duke) who for some reason or another did not have the opportunity to buy Armando's book when it was originally published, that I thought it was a great idea for him to reissue it. I bought the book at a concert in Milwaukee in 1980, and it has been a treasure ever since. The reissue is certain to be treasured in the same way. The rise of Genesis as a phenomenon is a timeless story, told with care and love, and the photos of the band and promotional material from the early days are priceless. It is very difficult to capture the feel of a concert in a static medium, but Armando is the master and each photo accomplishes this very difficult task. For longtime fans, it will bring memories into focus and perhaps also rekindle some youthful exuberance. For newer and younger fans, this book will enrich the understanding of this odd, sometimes fragile sounding group of amazing writers, musicians and performers. I Know What I Like was hailed as the best book written about a rock band, and it is still true today. The reissue has a few advantages. The fact that it is hardbound should make it more durable than the paperbound which was the most commonly available of the original releases. The new dustjacket is stunning, and Paul Whitehead's new introduction is a nice addition. But in the main, the book is printed exactly like it was originally, which, in my view, is the way to treat an historical document. Now, with the release of the long-awaited box set, the book, especially the early chapters, take on new meaning, and it is surprising how much we already knew about the music on CD 4, from the care that Armando Gallo took to tell us about it. Ciao,
From: Volker Warncke [uzse32@uni-bonn.de] Taking a little trip back with Father Armando... Even before I open the "I Know What I Like" 1998 re-issue for the first time I am taken back to the glorious era of Genesis by the beautiful dust jacket with all the right pictures on it. When I remove the cover and see the golden inscription on the dark-red leathery surface it reminds me of one of those magic books in fairy tales that put a spell on you or help you to master all the dangerous adventures ahead in the story. Immediately upon finally opening the book I am hit by a most curious smell emanating from the thick and glossy pages - it seems to be a blend of airplane kerosene mixed with the musty smell of a dark and damp cellar in an old house! Given that the book tells about the "dark, distant, slightly damp 70's" (to quote Phil on the WCD tour) and transports the reader with at least the speed of an airplane into those years I find the smell to be quite a proper perfume. The scent of mold that lingers on my kerosene fingers... The most important aspects of Armando's story here are certainly that it's being told from *within* the band and not just about them and that the narrator has actually traveled with the guys. It also helps that he actually was (and still is) a devoted fan and not just some journalist in the music business for whom something like this would be just another one of his routine jobs. And then there are the pictures... I would have bought the book for the pictures alone! No, I'm not devouring this work of art as fast and as completely as I can on the very first day - I'll put it on my desk or in my lap every now and then from now on and maybe read or re-read one or two chapters and marvel at some of the pictures in it. It shall live with me for a very long time... So hear and see a good friend tell his tale from one fan to all others :-) DCLXVI is no longer alone! Volker Warncke, University of Bonn, Germany Take a little trip back with Volker Tiresias at
Date: Fri, 9 Oct 1998 13:44:44 -0700 (PDT) Armando, Just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for your wonderful book. This is the first time I was able to see it and I must say everything I heard over the years is true! It is definitely a must for any serious Genesis fan. I discovered the band almost 19 years ago and have been hooked ever since. Thank you again for the love you put into "I Know What I Like" All the best,
From: Alegria Formoso Jorge [jalegria@cbinverlat.com.mx] Hello! I am from Mexico. Since ten years or more, I was aware of the existence of Armando's Book. Always refered to as "the Bible" of Genesis or something like that, and of course, a very rare item to find. I'm lucky enough to travel a lot, especialy to NY and not so often now to London. Always I visited stores trying to find rare material, I can say that I have a very complete album collection (singles, rare stuff, more than seven different sleeves for the first Genesis album, including an original one). Of course I'm a paperlater and even though I do not participate a lot, I read it every day. I visit The Path like once a month or so, definetely is the best Genesis related site and I want to take this opportunity to mention that and congratulate to every person participating in the making of this website. It was here where I found the news - and in paperlate as well - about the re-issue of Gallo's book. I ordered it and I have it now. For me, considering that I have more than 10 books related (P. Kamen, The biography, Chris Welch, Songs and musical Tabs, etc) I find the Book incredible. The pictures, the story... everything. I'm a HUGE fan, I traveled a lot to see the group several times (as you know, they never performed in Mexico, yet) and in Mexico It was more difficult to get "import" related records or CD's. Now I feel a lot better. It was worth the wait. Congratulations and best regards. Jorge Alegria
From: Walker, Edward [walker@engr.sc.edu] I haven't had much time to spend with Armando Gallo's book yet (it will take a LOT of time; it's so extensive), but "I know that I like it". I've been blown away in particular by my glances at the photos (the color ones especially). So many looks into Genesis, it's members, and the shows that I've never seen before. Fantastic. Great thanks goes out to Mr. Gallo. He has done great service to Genesis fans of all time, and has blessed the fans of today with the new printing. Ned Walker
From: Robby Tannert [rtannert@bellsouth.net] Armando Gallo asked that those of us that have received our copies of his book send our responses to you, so here goes: I just picked up my copy at the post office today, and I was so eager to see the book that I couldn't wait to get home before I opened the package. The only word I can use to describe it is magnificent. I never expected the wealth of pictures, many revealing of the other side of Genesis - the "off-duty" personas of the musicians that we don't usually see. Mr. Gallo is an extremely talented photographer; he's managed to capture all aspects of the band. This book is a true representation of Genesis and its members, and an excellent addition to any Genesis fan's library. Emily Tannert
From: Aljepson@aol.com I finally received my copy of 'I Know What I Like' last Monday and I have to say it's an excellent book, that is packed with lots of information and photographs some of which I have never seen before. I've only read a few pages of it and so far it's very interesting. The only criticism I would make though is that the period of 1980 to the present day were not covered as this is a re-issue. Having said that I would like to thank Armando Gallo for for putting so much effort into this book. Excellent book cover! Overall this book was definitely worth waiting for! A true collectors item for Genesis fans! Alan Jepson
From: Tom Harper [tomharper@lineone.net] Hello Thomas This is just a brief note to say I received my copy of "IKWIL" on 4th September, and a very fine piece of work it is. I won't attempt to give a review, since others have done a great job already. Books are often things of beauty, and this is no exception ... proof of the enduring value of printed words (and images) in the age of the Internet. Thanks to you for your excellent Genesis web site, and to Armando Gallo for making this legendary document available once more. "It is written in the book" Regards
From: Mr. Daoust [illo@videotron.ca] After much worries, I finally received Armando Gallo's "I know what I Like". Up here in St-Lambert (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), there was one copy at our city's library. It was all torn up and all the pics in the middle were missing. I always thought that this was one hell of a book. Now, I finally got it. I'm only 21 years old, so I can't say that it brings back old memories. For having seen "The Musical Box" in Montreal, I know some of the feeling you get from hearing "The Knife" or "Supper's Ready" live (without any drugs, thank you). This book brings me one step closer to getting the real feeling of listening and seeing, my own opinion, the best rock band ever. To Mr. Gallo: THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I would kiss you but you're in Italy and... well... I'm not that kind of guy. Yet, I hope you see how I appreciate this book! Thanks again!
From: Bazow, Steve [SP27423@SPHQ.SSP.NAVY.MIL] I just received my eagerly anticipated copy of GENESIS "I Know What I Like". I have been looking for years to find a comprehensive history of the early years of Genesis. To my amazement, I have not been able to find any book of quality either in the United States or overseas. Luckily, while cruising "The Path" on the net I discovered that a book, out of print was going to be republished. Taking a chance, I ordered a copy not knowing what to expect. To my utter delight, the book is everything any fan of one of the greatest rock groups in history could hope for. Upon first glance of the cover, I knew this book was going to contain only the highest printing quality. The cover (inside and back) is truly an outstanding work of art and one can only hope it is made into a print someday. The colors and quality of the artwork jump out at the reader. The book contains hundreds of rare pictures that every Genesis fan must see. The text is of equal quality. I could not put the book down, once I started reading it. The stories and the pictures are as refreshing as the band that inspired them. This book is truly a work of art and reflects the love of a great fan of one of the greatest bands. No Genesis fan should be without it.
From: Eric Gentry [eglerxst@email.msn.com] Thomas, I would first like to start by thanking you for being a wonderful channel through which Genesis fans all over the world can converge to learn, reminisce, and wonder about such fine musicians. God bless you. I am by no means a fanatic of anything. Idol worship to me is usually something I disdain, especially in this "image is everything" age we are in. After all... we're all just people. Listening to Genesis the way I have for the past four years is as close as I would come, in my opinion at least, to such a thing. Because I have such great admiration for the music of Genesis and it's members, and because Mr. Gallo requests it, I am writing you a review. I had been waiting for IKWIL to be released for months (years it seemed)... patiently, or impatiently at times. I am still fairly new to the Genesis "world" in comparison to many of the people that likely haunt your site. I only bought my first Genesis album about four years ago. Since that day, however, lying back and listening to Selling England by the Pound... I have been hooked. Being a musician myself, I devoured anything I could get my hands on to tell me more about what and who was behind the music. Bootlegs, articles, even trips to see The Musical Box (twice so far). This year has been especially good to me for two reasons; first being the release of the boxed set, the second being Mr. Gallo's book. As soon as I was able, I placed an order for the book and checked the front porch everyday like a kid waiting for a secret decoder ring to come in the mail. The day I saw the brown envelope waiting for me as I drove into my driveway from work, I knew that my plans for the evening had been made. The inside artwork and jacket are magnificent, but the story is priceless. I especially enjoyed the individual biographies of each member (Tony's in particular... I know so little about him). I couldn't put the book down, so I finished reading it from cover to cover that evening. Thanks for such a wonderful book... maybe now I can explain things a little better to my friends and family when they ask me why I like Genesis so much. Sincerely,
From: Prosser, Eric [eprosser@dcn.att.com] Thomas, Received my IKWIL in the mail a few days ago. For twelve years I've been looking for a copy. For about the same amount of money that I would had to have spent on a used copy I now have a new one!!! Thanks Armando for supplying the next generation of Genesis fans with their "guide book". Thanks Again,
From: M. van Dommelen [dommelen@globalxs.nl] Hi Thomas, I just received my copy of Armando Gallo's much appreciated book. With this message I want to let you, and all the pathfinders, know that I think it's worth it! BTW, the book is carefully packed and I received it in mint condition. I once borrowed it in '78 from my local library and couldn't get hold of it since. In my honest opinion it's one of a kind; the best document about Genesis in the early years. Gives good insight in the growth of many of the superb music they made. Maybe sometime in the future Armando will find the energy and time to make the sequel about the period from 1980 onwards (hint, hint). In the meantime thank you and of course Armando for your fine work to bring this work alive again. Marcel van Dommelen
From: Marty Saletta [msaletta@eoc.ecs.nasa.gov] Hello Armando and Thomas! With the Genesis CD catalog having been remastered a short time ago, and with the release (finally!) of the first box set (up to 1975) also remastered, why not remaster the "Genesis bible" as well? I had been lucky almost 10 years ago when I found the reprint of IKWIL new in a bookstore in Toronto, so the book's text and pictures were already quite familiar to me. But just like the remastered Genesis CDs, this new edition shines new light on what was already *the* book on the subject of Gabriel-era Genesis. When the book arrived I grabbed my old copy and did a compare on several of the pictures to see if even my untrained eyes could notice a difference. I could. The pictures in the new edition are much more darker which add quite a bit of depth to the photos. The one that I noticed the most was the photo of Gabriel taken next to the headlights with "starred eyes", my favorite picture in the book. Next to the new issue, my older book looks like a true but faded Xerox copy. As I was flipping the pages I also noticed that the quality of paper in the new edition is much, much heavier stock and feels quite a bit nicer to the touch. So, hats off to Armando for providing the definitive edition of his wonderful book, and also to Thomas for providing an exceptional web site and a forum for Armando to "get the word out", so to speak. Thanks! Marty Saletta, System Administrator
From: Marco Soijer [M.W.Soijer@lr.tudelft.nl] Hi, "It is here - it is now" Yesterday, I found my copy of the new issue of Armando Gallo's "I know what I like" in the mail. I was a bit afraid I wouldn't get it, as I ordered it by fax and there is no way to check in that case whether ones order has been received. But it has and was carried out perfectly. Wat a gem this is! I must admit I never saw the original IKWIL (shame on me ;-) and it's better than what I'd expected. A truely wonderful collection of background information and great photographs, that is going to keep me occupied for the upcoming evenings for sure. I'd like to thank Armando Gallo and everybody who helped in putting this book together, and of course Thomas Holter for making me aware that this book existed at all and for providing a way to order it. Everybody who is a Genesis fan and hasn't ordered this yet: Change your mind. It's worth every penny. All the best,
From: Kathrin Kunstmann [kunstmann.rausch@nwn.de] Hi, Yesterday morning I received a mysterious heavy parcel, stamped somewhere in Italy, packed so carefully that you'd expect to find something like Plutonium inside. Hmmm. No idea what this could be. (Because no email warned me, Thomas!) But then... Wow, this book really is a BIBLE! First impression: luxorious, fantastic new artwork, brilliant colours, paper de luxe and amazingly bright photos. Signed, as promised. Very extraordinary! Do you know the smell of new cars? New cheap paperbacks stink just the same. Armando Gallo's lovely old style hardcover smells very different. It's a book you'd place beside your bed. Even when you have the original issue, this new edition is a must. And if you're lucky and have seen Genesis live this year, you should start with the last page... Thanks, love, bye!
From: Steve Cherashore [cherasho@TCNJ.EDU] Dear Armando: I am a long time fan of Genesis and have received my copy of the book. I love the book and as a photographer you did an excellent job, it is great. I would love to see the day hopefully soon that a reunion tour with Peter, Mike, Phil, Tony and Steve take place. Take care,
From: jhaans@sci.kun.nl Hi all, I received my (signed!!! I didn't expect to be amongst the first 500!) copy of "I know what I like" in the mailbox yesterday. My brother owns a copy of its predecessor, "Genesis - Evolution of a rock band", and I must say that this new 'version' is even better (beautiful paper, wow!). This new deluxe issue of "IKWIL" is the fulfillment of an old dream. Finally, I got my hands on this stunning "Genesis-bible"! I warmly recommend this book to anyone who loves 1970's Genesis (and anyone who loves Genesis, period!). Breathtakingly beautiful pictures and loads of information on the best band in the world. An absolute must!!! Lots of thanks go to Armando Gallo for releasing this new edition!! I'm sure you are making loads of Genesis fans very happy, since your former books have become such a rarity nowadays. As you say: One love! Thanks again! A big, big thank you and compliments to Thomas Holter for effectively 'rolling the ball' using his brilliant website The Path and helping to convince Armando to re-issue the Book. I'm glad I partook in your initial e-mail petition! It worked!!! Thanks a lot also for hosting the ordering information! Thanks to all others who did their bit in getting this re-issue off the ground (Joanne Yearwood, Jack Beermann, Sue Town of 'Paperlate' etc etc)!! I never thought that the year 1998 would bring back so fully the 70's-era of Genesis! The Book, the box-set and seeing the brilliant Genesis tribute band The Musical Box stunningly re-create the 'Selling England by the Pound Tour' in Ottawa!! A brilliant year indeed! Tip for anybody who reads this: The Musical Box play their *final* "SEBTP" concert on November 14th 1998 in Montreal, Canada. Don't hesitate, go and see them while you still can. You won't be sorry, it's absolutely mindblowing! Best regards,
From: danderso@edelman.com Armando, Thanks for putting it all together again. The new edition is beautiful, and acts as a perfect compliment to the first box set. Paul Whitehead's new dust jacket is brilliant. No fan of '70's Genesis should be without this book. Thanks to Thomas for helping it happen, and for consistently putting out the best and most interesting Genesis site on the Internet. Whether you're an "old fart" or just became a fan last year with Calling All Stations, The Path is indispensible. Bravo! Best regards,
From: Jana [JanaShepard@worldnet.att.net] Hi Thomas I received my copy of Armando Gallo's masterpiece GENESIS I Know What I Like yesterday. Jana Shepard - JanaShepard@worldnet.att.net
From: MICHAEL LIZZI [MAGGIANO.FORTLEE.MICHAELL@maggianolaw.com] Yesterday I received a SIGNED copy of IKWIL. I had sent a regular bank money order from New Jersey, USA, to Armando Gallo in LA even though the instructions for non-credit card orders in the US called for either a check or international money order. My instincts and common sense told me this should work. The book included a letter from Armando Gallo telling me I was one of the first to receive the book because I used a postal money order or international money order (as opposed to a check). He also asked me to pass along this information, and so I have... Thanks to THE PATH I was able to get a book that I once possessed roughly 17 years ago but which was lost without a trace after I generously lent it out to friends (who in turn lent it out). The new artwork by Mr. Whitehead is stunningly evocative. I think I'll hold on to this copy. It's a brilliant tribute to an enduringly remarkable group. The Path Is Clear!
From: gregor k. [gregor-k@monmouth.com] Hi Thomas and fellow Path readers, I just received my copy of the reissue of "I Know What I Like" today. In one word: wonderful!! If you've never owned the original you'll see why it's become known as "the bible" to fans and if you did you'll still want to have this beautiful deluxe edition. I've been a Genesis fan since a friend turned me on to "Trespass" in grammar school, so to me those early years were the real Genesis. The post Gabriel/Hackett years were only a pale echo of that magic (sorry if I've offended anyone!); Armando's book is the best way to bring it back. The new dust jacket and foreword by Paul Whitehead are great. The later is particularly interesting if you've ever wondered about the collaboration between Paul and the band that brought about those early "works of art" album covers. My best to Armando, Paul, Thomas and all you Path readers and Genesis fans!
